Please pray for the following urgent needs from our Foreign Missions
Division:
From Kathy Crossley (Regional Prayer Coordinator, South America Region):
Please continue praying for Peru and the saints as they recover from the
earthquake. This morning an aftershock of 5.9 hit the area of Pisco again
causing further deaths and destruction. Of the 15 churches we have in the area
of the earthquake, 10 have been destroyed. This involves about 1,000 church
members of the UPC of Peru. Most hospitals in the area are in ruins and those
that are standing are overwhelmed. The injured need to be transported to Lima,
but the roads are interrupted by breaks in the road. We do have some saints
missing, and many injured. Pray that we can get to them with the basic
necessities of mattresses, bedding, food, water, clothing and medical supplies.
From John Hopkins (Regional Director for Central America/Caribbean):
Please pray for our saints in the path of Hurricane Dean. It has been announced
that the countries of Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti are presently in the
path of this category 4 hurricane. Please pray for God's protecting power to
cover these nations and our saints that will be affected by the high winds and
flooding that will accompany a storm of this nature.

Lessons Learned on Prayer from the Bible
Hezekiah was a good king of Judah. It was said that he was one of Judah's best
Kings. Oddly enough, his father was Ahaz, one of Judah's most wicked and
ineffective kings. When Hezekiah took the throne at the ripe old age of 25, the
kingdom was in shambles. To his advantage he had a three major things going his
way. He had a good mother, a preacher in his life (the prophet Isaiah) and he
had a prayer life that wouldn't quit.
The Assyrian king was busy subduing nation after nation when he received a
report that the Egyptian king was planning to march against him. Figuring he
needed to consolidate his territory, he sent a letter to Hezekiah. The gist of
the letter was this; Hezekiah, don't think for one minute that your little god
is going to save you from me. If you know what's good for you, you'll just
surrender. I will remind you that Assyria has dominated every other nation in
this part of the world. None of their gods saved them and yours won't save you.
Now Hezekiah's response is my favorite part of this whole story. Hezekiah takes
the letter to the temple lays it out on the floor and prays. "God, will you read
this! Do you see what he's saying about you? He's insulting you! He's saying you
aren't interested in us, that you aren't aware, and that you lack the power to
do anything about his threats. He says you're just like the blind, deaf and dumb
idols of all the other nations. So God, what are you going to do about this?"
God's responded immediately to Hezekiah's prayer. An angel struck the camp of
the Assyrian army and 185,000 died.
What do we learn from Hezekiah? We learn that if we pray, the Lord will fight
our battles.
The most arresting words in this story are the words God addressed to Hezekiah:
"Because you have prayed to me." This clearly implies that God would not have
acted had Hezekiah not prayed.
Stop wearing yourself out trying to fight battles on your own. Why not pray and
let the Lord do it for you? Last time I checked, he is still undefeated.

Sick and Suffering
Zimbabwe has been tormented this entire decade by both deep recession and high
inflation, but in recent months the economy seems to have abandoned whatever
moorings it had left. The national budget has already been largely spent.
Government services have started to crumble due to the 1000 percent inflation
hike. The drastic effect that it will have on the poorest of the country may be
devastating. Pray for the economic situation there. Pray that the authorities
will be divinely inspired with a resolution to the problem before the worst
effects are felt. Intercede that the Lord would raise up God fearing leaders
that will have the courage to make any necessary changes for bettering the
country as a whole. Also, pray for our missionaries to Zimbabwe who are
currently on deputation. (Tremayne and Vicki Simoneaux) Pray they will be able
to raise their budget quickly and beable to get back to the field.
Young children are among tens of thousands of refugees who have fled the civil
war in the Central African Republic. Many are suffering "alarming" malnutrition
and need immediate aid. The Geneva-based international aid agency said
"insufficient protection and assistance" for more than 26,000 refugees in 59
sites along Cameroon's eastern border "has led to a serious deterioration in
their medical and nutritional situation. Pray that immediate help is given
without interference. Intercede that believers would be able to share the love
of Christ with those who need a God who can respond in the moment of crisis.
Streets and Society
With the upcoming Olympics in China in 2008, many see this as an opportunity to
reach out to the Chinese people through evangelism. Pray that the orchestrated
efforts taking place to spread the gospel in China would be God breathed.
Intercede for Divine protection for those who will risk persecution to tell
someone about Christ. Ask God to encourage Christians in China as they face
escalating persecution ahead of the Olympics in 2008. Pray that an unprecedented
revival would explode in China and that people would come by the thousands to
Christ.
The families of the remaining 21 South Korean hostages being held in central
Afghanistan say they have all but lost hope for the survival of their loved ones
after a second hostage's body was recovered. Pray for the remaining hostages
that they would be rescued immediately. These innocent people may die and the
only answer would be a miracle from the God who hears and responds to the
effectual, fervent prayers of a righteous man. Do not faint in well doing.
Continue to intercede for these people and their families that God would be
glorified in this.

Family Prayer
After dinner every day, or once a week, go around the table and have each person
share something they are grateful for. After you have gone around three times,
and everyone has shared three things they are grateful for, have someone lead a
prayer of thanks to God.
Meet once a week with the whole family and take some fun Bible time together. If
your kids are old enough, and are interested, let them be in charge and
encourage them to use skits, games or anything interactive that will illustrate
or draw attention to a Bible story or principle. Use this time to share what has
been on your heart, prayer requests, new revelations, or scriptures that you
like.
At a weekly family gathering, ask each person to share one character trait they
would like to work on. Then have the other members of the family pray for that
person's character everyday. Next week, report on the progress and continue to
pray, or move on to another trait.

Sick and Suffering
Torrential rain in Mozambique has already caused extensive flooding, forcing
thousands of people from their homes and destroying valuable crops. The harvest
was due in April and May. There have been heavy rains since January, causing
rivers such as the Zambezi to burst their banks. Despite being well prepared for
floods supplies are beginning to run out and the floods are making it difficult
for agencies to reach those in need. To make a bad situation worse, Cyclone
Favio ripped through central Mozambique at the end of February. Give thanks that
the preparedness of the Mozambican authorities has saved many lives. Pray: 1.
that relief efforts will be effective. 2. for wisdom for local authorities and
aid agencies about how to handle the long-term effects of the floods on
agriculture and avert a major food shortage. 3. for good healthcare to reduce
the risk from epidemics of diarrhea, cholera and other waterborne diseases.
Madagascar has already been hit by six storms this hurricane season. The latest
is estimated to have devastated some 80 per cent of the island's vanilla
harvest. This is the country's main export. The rice crop has also been
affected. Almost 200,000 people were in need of food aid even before Indlala
struck. In the arid south of Madagascar some half a million people are being
affected by drought. Strong winds created by the cyclone are preventing aid from
being flown into Madagascar. Please pray that aid will get through as soon as
possible to those who need it most. Intercede for victims of these natural
disasters for peace and patience to see this through. Implore for those working
to bring relief efforts for strength and wisdom. Pray too that the bridge into
Mandritsara will be repaired so that aid can reach the town.
Streets and Society
The republic government of Cote d'Ivoire has recently been focused on easing the
tension among the current President, Gbagbo, and his opposition group that have
secured themselves in the northern regions. Several French and West African
troops have been stationed in the northern area to maintain peace and to assist
in rehabilitating the land. The major industries that drive the economy in Cote
d'Ivoire are agriculture, ship construction, and truck assembly and repair, to
name a few. Cote d'Ivoire needs prayers in the area of protection and stability.
Pray that the country would be protected from the rebel groups that have taken
siege over the north and that the current government could restore the country
to where it needs to be. Pray for the stability of the economy as weather can
have a major impact on the overall production of coffee, cocoa beans and palm
oil, all very important staples to Cote d'Ivoire's economy. Please pray for
protection, revelation and provision over the Christian community as well as the
Muslim and Indigenous communities.
Christians in southeast Ethiopia face increased violence and tension as Muslims
recently beat an Christian to death. Tedase, an Ethiopian evangelist was beaten
and killed by Muslims as he and two young women were taking part in street
witnessing. While the women escaped, witnesses say Muslims chased the man,
caught up with him, pulled him into a mosque, and attacked him. Evangelical
church leaders say if police ignore his death, it will empower radical Muslims
and encourage them to attack Christians without fear of retribution. Pray for
the Muslims that attacked this man. Pray that authorities would seek justice for
the evangelicals so that these crimes are not repeated. Pray for God to visit
the Muslims powerfully, revealing Himself graciously to those not seeking him.
